Friday Night

September 2nd, 2008

Alan left for a conference in downtown Seattle on Friday.  Since he was staying away from home for the night, I had Erin sleep in our bed with me.  I figured I would try to minimize the chance that she would wake up in the middle of the night.  I had a 6AM workout scheduled so I wanted to make sure I got enough sleep the night before.  Erin fell asleep fairly quickly.  An hour later, she started to roll.  Usually she rolls around and kicks us for leverage.  This time she kept rolling.  By the time I realized she was close to the edge of the bed, she rolled off and hit her head on the end table.  Of course that reopened her wound from two weeks ago.  Sean and I tried to put pressure and an ice pack on  her forehead.  We were semi-successful.  The liquid bandage the ER used on the wound initially has been holding up so I didn’t think we needed to go to the ER again.  After a good bout of crying, she eventually fell back to sleep.

Now we’re back to the topic of protective head gear.  My friend Tina’s father used to manufacture bio-medical supplies.  He said that there are better closed cell foam material out there than neoprene.  I did a little research and found polyethylene foam.  This material is used for hard hats, football helmets, and other high impact resistant head gear.  Tina’s father said that the material absorbs the vibrations and shock better than neoprene.  So now I am shopping around for hats for Erin.  Kate (Erin’s OT) suggested that we get the polyethylene foam, cut it in strips, and insert it in the rim of the hats.  I am so excited!  I bought her a cute page boy hat at the outlet mall.  We’re going to try Kate’s idea and hopefully Tina and I can fabricate a custom hat for her.
