Injury

March 20th, 2009

This week has been a long week.  The daycare has been hopping all week.  In addition to, Erin’s preschool didn’t have school on Wednesday and Thursday for parent conferences.  She loves going to school but she also loves to play with the daycare kids.  She has enjoyed her short school week.  Today is a teacher workday for the rest of the school kids so there is much more activity in the playroom.

I was standing at the changing table tending to a child and Erin, being my shadow, was standing next to me.  Before I knew it, a rocking chair came flying backwards and hit Erin on her right shoulder.  Panic ran threw my body when I realized she was hit hard in the one shoulder that she still has mobility in.  I calmed Erin down and ran upstairs to get her Prednisone.  I had not been that shaken up in a long time.  My hands were shaking while rummaging through the medicine cabinet looking for the pills.  I came across the oral suspension form of Prednisone first so I grabbed it along with a medicine dropper.  When Erin was first diagnosed, we were given Prednisone as a liquid  but she would spit the medicine out.  It tastes horrible.  I tried a little bit and my lips went numb.  That’s when we experimented with “peanut butter pills.”  We would crush up a Prednisone pill and add a dab of peanut butter to help mask the taste.  Today I wasn’t patient enought to do all that.  Luckily Erin took the liquid Prednisone but she did let me know it didn’t taste very well.  Once the anxiety subsided and Erin was cuddling in the recliner with me, I finally saw the area on her shoulder that was hit.  The top of her shoulder blade is very red and is scratched a bit.

I met with Erin’s preschool teachers and I reminded them that if she sustains an injury to any major joint, I would want the school to administer the Prednisone that I left in the nurses’ office.  I mentioned Cody’s story to the teachers.  Although Cody’s story involved a malicious act, I reiterated that I do expect Erin to fall at school.  I now need to find a small packet of peanut butter to leave with her medication at school.  The sooner the Prednisone is administered, the better.  Now I am thinking of packing a bag when we are out and about to make sure I have medicine available.  I can’t believe I had not thought about this sooner.

My poor baby girl! I hope she is feeling better now. Can you tell if it’s going to amount to anything–like a flareup??? I know you were scared out of your mind, too. Give her a big kiss for Memaw! And the boys, too!!
