The Lives of Erin Kate and Miranda

Well, it finally happened…Alan’s department was let go yesterday.  All last week, the remaining executive employees were in closed door meetings.  Word got out that the company did not have enough funds to survive through the end of June.  Apparently with “start up” companies, the first two departments to be axed is Marketing and Human Resources.  Human Resources wasn’t a thriving department at the company so it was gone well over a year ago.  Unfortunately there were a few people left in Marketing and a total of seven employees were laid off yesterday.

At least we had a week to prepare ourselves.  We really thought it was going to happen last Friday.  I had planned a camping trip to Port Angeles for Mother’s Day weekend and unfortunately we had to cancel it.  I was quite bitter about canceling it but it had to be done.  Every year KOA has a weekend in May where they offer a “stay Friday night and get Saturday night free.”  It’s their fundraising weekend for their special camps for seriously ill children.  Oh well…maybe next year.

Now I am looking into all our options for medical and food assistance.  Believe it or not, I don’t make a whole lot of money doing a daycare.  Shocking…I know.  I am remembering a few potential families that have come through to tour my daycare and have asked me if I was doing daycare for the money.  Ummm….yeah, there are a lot of in-home daycare providers living a lavish lifestyle <<insert sarcasm here>>.  Luckily there are programs that we can tap into.  I’ll need to blog about our experience with each entity we apply to.  So far I have applied for reduced lunch cost for the boys through the school district, contacted an agency through the school district regarding food assistance and low cost medical for the kids, and I applied for DSHS (Department of Social and Health Services of Washington) benefits.  I am not sure how long each will take to get an answer.  Our medical runs out on June 1st.  Hopefully we won’t have a lapse of coverage for the kids.  All three kids take multiple medications.  With the current medical plan we have with Alan’s job, our medicine co-pays were at $250 a month.  Maybe we’ll be able to reduce that amount on another plan.

There is no doubt in my mind that Alan will find another job.  I am keeping my fingers crossed for a better medical plan.  Three kids with all separate medical issues can be quite costly.  We’ll get through this.  We’ve been through this before and we always come out on top!

I’m sorry this happened to you guys. I was recently laid off, but since I am Canadian I don’t have to worry about medical care. I actually thought at the time that this would be a huge concern if I were in the US, even without any medical issues. I hope that Alan finds something soon, with a great medical plan for your family.
